The Battle Against Japan's Collective Amnesia of WWII "Comfort Girls"

In 1990 in preparation for a state visit to Japan by South Korean president Roh Tae-Woo, the Japanese government agreed to compile a list of former South Korean colonial subjects forced to labor for Imperial Japan during World War II.There was a glaring omission-- there was no mention of the so-called "comfort girls," who were forced into sexual slavery for Japanese soldiers fighting on the front line. When Jocelyn Ford, one of the first foreign national reporters for Japan's Kyodo News Service, learned of this omission, she set her heart on bringing the long-forgotten women back into the public's awareness. But her editors tried to stop this. Jocelyn will reveal the back story of how she overcame her bosses' efforts to sweep this shameful history under the carpet. She'll also discuss other incidents that have not garnered the attention they deserve.

(Jocelyn Ford)

Jocelyn Ford
Beijing-based award-winning radio correspondent and filmmaker Jocelyn Ford has been a journalist in Asia for over three decades. She has a passion for stories on under-reported social issues.

Her reporting for Kyodo News on the WWII “comfort women” was a catalyst for the Japanese government to acknowledge a role in WWII forced prostitution.
In 2001 Jocelyn became the first foreigner to co-produce and co-host China Radio International’s first live drive-time news show.
Jocelyn’s professional honors include an Overseas Press Club, a National Press Club award and a Jefferson Fellowship from the Hawaii-based East West Center.
